Spammy “Blacknight” Email

If you’re a Modus client and you receive an email that looks like it’s from Blacknight asking you to renew your domain name, check with us first. See the above image with the domain name redacted. There is a scam at the moment and many of our clients have received emails that invite you to renew your domain name. In all the cases we have seen, the domain names used to be managed by Blacknight. The emails are sent to info@yourdomainname. We have contacted Blacknight and here’s their response (which we would echo):

“Thanks for reporting this to us. The email did not come from us and is a form of scam. Please do not click on any of the links in the email.

What is this about?

Unfortunately we and our clients are currently being targeted by a spate of email phishing attacks.

If you have sent us a sample of the phishing email that you got we appreciate it.

What are you doing about it?

Our senior staff are working with partners in industry to get the malicious websites taken offline as quickly as possible.

How did the scammers get my email address?

Unfortunately there are a lot of email databases for sale online. From what we can tell the scammers are using a very large list of Irish email addresses

Has Blacknight been compromised?

We take the security of our systems very seriously and to the best of our knowledge there has not been any breach of security.

What can I do if I clicked on the links in the email?

If you clicked on the links in the scam email please let us know.”
